Welcome to the 81st WAZA Annual Conference

Dear Colleagues and Friends,
On behalf of the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA), it is my pleasure to invite you to join us for the 81st WAZA Annual Conference, hosted by Cologne Zoo, Germany.
Each year, the WAZA Annual Conference moves across continents, bringing together diverse regions and perspectives around one shared responsibility for conservation impact worldwide. After recent gatherings in San Diego, Sydney and Cali, the conference now continues its journey in Europe, hosted by Cologne Zoo. United through WAZA, we come together to shape shared direction and lead collectively as a global zoo and aquarium community.
Cologne Zoo provides a strong and fitting setting for this next chapter in our journey. Founded in 1860, it is one of Europe’s oldest and most respected zoological institutions and an internationally recognised leader in species conservation, animal welfare, science, and public engagement. With a long-standing commitment to both local action and international collaboration, the zoo reflects the values and responsibilities that underpin WAZA’s global mission.
As we gather in Cologne, the conference will offer a collective moment to reflect, connect, and lead together as stewards of tomorrow, shaping shared direction with purpose, reinforcing our global responsibility, and strengthening the leadership role of our community in a rapidly changing world.
We very much look forward to welcoming you to Cologne and to continuing this shared journey together.
Yours aye,
David Field
WAZA President

Dear colleagues from all over the world,
Welcome to the heart of Europe! On behalf of Cologne Zoo, it is a great honor to us to invite you to the 81st WAZA Annual Conference.
Cologne has been welcoming people from all over the world for 2,000 years. Founded by the Romans, the largest city at the Rhine river has always been a place of exchange, trade and forward-looking dialogue. We are truly delighted to continue this wonderful tradition and to welcome you all again to Cologne.
Cologne is lively, Cologne is vibrant, Cologne connects people. And so does its zoo.
With more than 10,000 animals from almost 800 species, Cologne Zoo attracts more than 1 million guests every year. Cologne Zoo is the city’s top attraction after the world famous Cologne Cathedral, Kölner Dom. Cologne inspires people and creates connections for a meaningful cause. As a result, hosting the WAZA conference again for the third time was a natural conclusion.– this is unique and an honor that no other zoo has yet experienced. Already in 1960 we had the privilege of hosting this meeting for the first time and in 2010, on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of Cologne Zoo, the second time.
As a scientifically managed zoo, we represent state-of-the-art husbandry, outstanding service, and exceptional guest experiences, while demonstrating a strong commitment to conservation, research, and education that inspires people of all generations.
We warmly invite you to join us for the 81st WAZA Annual Conference in Cologne, in the heart of Europe — an unforgettable and productive event featuring inspiring lectures, hands-on workshops, engaging discussions, and an attractive social and evening programme!
See you in Cologne!
